About Me

Hi I’m Rob Smith. Thank you for visiting my site.
I have been taking photographs for over 50 years. My first camera was an old box brownie which I acquired from my grandmother together with a couple of contact printing frames; this gave me an interest in developing my own black and white films and prints.
My photographic inspiration came from Ansel Adams. I invested what little money I could afford in a cheap Zenith camera system and Paterson darkroom equipment to produce my own black and white prints, but none as inspiring as those by Adams.
It has taken many years for me to understand the real art of photography and to learn to accept that truly outstanding, awe inspiring pictures, are rare. They can often come through a matter of chance as much as by design.
Today I use the Olympus digital camera system and love the post-processing on the computer as much as taking the pictures themselves. My main interest lies in landscape photography, but no subject is off limits, my intent is to produce a picture that is captivating and interesting, but success as they say is in the eye of the beholder.
Whilst photography has always been my first love, I have dabbled in more artistic ways to produce pictures. It started with a few attempts at colouring some of my black and white prints. Then I tried my hand at oil painting and watercolours, but with a lack of tuition (no such thing as the internet in those days) my attempts could be described as poor at best.
In recent years I was again inspired to have a go at painting with watercolours, but rapidly found that I couldn’t draw. Now with easy access to online help I have learnt to draw with graphite and I am experimenting with charcoal, watercolours and acrylics. I’m not really the kind of person to sit out in a public place drawing and painting. So the whole process of taking a photograph, processing the image and then using the image to develop a drawing or painting sums up my ultimate desire.
There are so many great photographers and artists out there and I don’t pretend to be one of them. I’m an ordinary photographer and a budding artist. But I do have many years of ordinary experience, many trials and errors, and I hope that I can pass on something of use to you, the reader.
My blog posts will aim to inform and teach and I will be adding information on equipment, picture taking and post-processing. If you are looking for information that I have not yet covered please let me know through the contact form and I will do my best to cover the topic if I can.
